Cultivation: Hardcore Tribulation

Nine Deaths, One Life. On a hardcore server, a failed tribulation should cost more than the ritual's own penalty — now it can cost a life.

Hardcore Tribulation raises the stakes on Cultivation's breakthrough, advancement, and ascension rituals for a server actually running Hytale's own hardcore mode. Fail a ritual, walk away from one mid-attempt, or die to the tribulation lightning itself, and Judgment can charge one of your hardcore lives — not just the ritual's ordinary penalty. Which ritual kinds are chargeable, how many lives a failure costs, and a realm floor below which Judgment never fires at all are all the server owner's call.

Run out of lives and one of two things happens, whichever the server owner picked: your Dao foundation is Severed — a persisted debuff that slows Qi gain and worsens tribulation lightning damage until you pay to fix it — or you are Cast Down a full realm and every banked wisp of Qi scatters to the wind. A cultivator running a different progression system entirely is spared the realm drop and Severed instead, since a full-realm demotion means nothing against a replacement ladder.

Reforging is the way back from a Severed Foundation: `/reforge` pays Spirit Stones on a cooldown, and never leaves a truly locked-out cultivator with nothing to do even if their current profile was not the one that got Severed. Every refusal gets its own message, and nothing is ever charged on one. Worth knowing up front: this addon only has teeth on a server where Hytale's own hardcore mode is actually turned on — on an ordinary server it does nothing by default.

At a glance

  • Judgment charges your engine hardcore lives for a failed, abandoned, or lethal breakthrough/advancement/ascension ritual — Per-Player by default, or opt in to the Global shared pool
  • Two exhaustion rungs, server owner's choice: Foundation Severed (a recoverable debuff) or Realm Cast Down (drop a full realm, wipe your Qi)
  • `/reforge` pays Spirit Stones on a cooldown to clear a Severed Foundation and/or recover lives; an admin row bypasses both entirely
  • A configurable realm floor exempts every early cultivator from Judgment by default
  • Reads the server's own hardcore mode at boot and logs exactly what it means for this addon
  • Reports its own version, build integrity, and Cultivation-version compatibility, the same as every other Cultivation addon

How Judgment decides

Before a life is ever charged, Judgment first decides whether this failure even counts.

  • Breakthrough, advancement, and ascension failures can each be turned on or off independently — advancement defaults off, since it is already the more forgiving tier in vanilla Cultivation.
  • Whether abandoning an active ritual counts as failing it outright is a separate switch, off by default.
  • How many lives a single failure costs (one by default) and how long after a strike the verdict still counts as that same attempt (twelve seconds by default, rather than a stray later death) are both configurable.
  • Dying to the tribulation lightning itself does not cost an extra life by default — the engine's own hardcore death handling already burned one for the death — but a separate switch adds one more on top if a server owner wants it to.
  • A realm floor (Foundation Establishment by default) exempts every cultivator at or below it — Body Refinement, Qi Condensation, and Foundation Establishment by default — from Judgment entirely.

Two rungs once your lives run out

The server owner picks exactly one, and it applies server-wide.

  • Foundation Severed: a persisted, recoverable debuff. Qi gathers at half its normal pace and tribulation lightning strikes for one and a half times its normal fury by default, both configurable, plus an optional Meridian Injury on top (on by default).
  • Realm Cast Down: drops a full realm and wipes every banked wisp of Qi outright, never below the lowest realm in the game.
  • Running a different progression system in place of Cultivation's own realms downgrades an exhaustion to Foundation Severed automatically instead — a full-realm demotion has no ladder left to demote you on.
  • Broadcasting the exhaustion to the whole server is on by default and can be turned off.

Reforging — the way back

`/reforge` is the only way back from a Severed Foundation.

  • Pays 30 Spirit Stones by default, no more than once every 24 hours by default — tracked with a timestamp that survives logout and a server restart, not a session flag.
  • A successful reforge restores no lives by default, but a server owner can set it to hand back one or more, always clamped to whatever the server itself configures for hardcore mode.
  • Eligible whenever your active profile is Severed, or your account's own hardcore lives are actually exhausted even though the active profile was never the one that got Severed — the second case is guaranteed at least one life back, so the payment is never for nothing.
  • Every refusal — nothing to fix, reforging disabled, still cooling down, a fleeing Nascent Soul, too few Spirit Stones — gets its own message, and nothing is ever charged on a refusal.
  • An admin row on the Players tab of Cultivation's own admin panel clears a Severed Foundation for free, bypassing the cost and cooldown entirely, and carries the same rescue for a player who is genuinely locked out.

For server owners

  • Reads the server's own hardcore mode — Per-Player, Global, or off — at boot and logs exactly what that means for this addon.
  • Whether Judgment is even allowed to burn from a Global shared pool is its own opt-in, off by default — one player's failed tribulation would otherwise end the run for the entire server.
  • A separate opt-in keeps the scar ledger and its two consequences working on a server with hardcore mode off entirely, since there are no engine lives to burn in that case.
  • A persisted per-profile scar ledger — failures, lives burned, Severed state, reforge cooldown — follows each of your Cultivation profiles independently, so switching profiles cannot dodge or reset it.
  • Reports its own version, build integrity, and Cultivation-version compatibility, the same as every other Cultivation addon.
  • All five of Cultivation's locales ship: English, Simplified Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian and Ukrainian.

What it needs

  • Only does anything on a server actually running Hytale's own hardcore mode. With hardcore mode off, this addon is inert by default — a separate opt-in can still apply Foundation Severed or Realm Cast Down without any lives behind them, but nothing here works on an ordinary server unless that is turned on.
  • Cultivation 0.10.3 or newer — the manifest will stop an install on anything older.
  • Hytale Server API 0.6.8.
  • Server-side only. Your players install nothing.

Version history

    • Built against Hytale Server API 0.6.8. Requires Cultivation 0.10.3 or newer.
    • Judgment: a failed, abandoned, or lethal breakthrough/advancement/ascension ritual charges the cultivator's engine hardcore lives — Per-Player by default, or opt in to the Global shared pool — gated per ritual kind, by a configurable realm floor, and by a window of time tying a tribulation death back to the strike that caused it.
    • The Consequence Ladder: once lives are exhausted, the server owner's choice of Foundation Severed (a persisted debuff that slows Qi gain and worsens tribulation lightning damage, with an optional Meridian Injury) or Realm Cast Down (drops a full realm and wipes banked Qi, never below the lowest realm, and self-downgrading to Foundation Severed when a replacement progression system is installed).
    • Reforging: `/reforge` pays 30 Spirit Stones by default, no more than once every 24 hours by default (tracked through logout and a server restart), to clear a Severed Foundation and/or recover hardcore lives. Lives restored default to 0 and are always clamped to the server's own configured hardcore life count. Every refusal gets its own message, and nothing is ever charged on a refusal.
    • An admin row on the Players tab of Cultivation's own admin panel clears a Severed Foundation for free, bypassing Reforging's cost and cooldown, and carries the same rescue so an admin can always free a genuinely locked-out player.
    • A persisted per-profile scar ledger — failures, lives burned, Severed state, reforge cooldown — follows Cultivation's own profile switch, create, and delete, independent per profile.
    • Boot-time detection of the server's own hardcore mode (Per-Player, Global, or off), with an opt-in to still apply the Foundation Severed / Realm Cast Down consequences on a server with hardcore mode off entirely.
    • Reports its own version, build integrity, and Cultivation-version compatibility, the same as every other Cultivation addon.
    • All five of Cultivation's locales ship: English, Simplified Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian and Ukrainian.
