Breakthrough Quality
Surviving a realm breakthrough used to be the whole story — reach the next realm and you got exactly what that realm always paid. Six separate modifiers now shape how strong the realm you land in actually turns out to be: what your Qi was made of, a difficulty you choose, and four more factors about how and where you broke through.
Every modifier on this page applies only to a full realm breakthrough — never to an ordinary sub-stage advancement, and never touched by a failed ritual's demotion.
Qi Purity
Not all banked Qi is equal anymore. Meditation, quests, bounties, duels, rivals, treasure caches, campaign and trial rewards, Master-Disciple bonds, beast arts, weapon-spirit hits, Devil-path kills, and your Dwelling's drip all still count as pure Qi, exactly as before.
Spirit, Profound, and Divine Cores are the one exception. Lean on them too heavily and your next realm breakthrough comes out weaker for it.
| Value | Key | |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum penalty | up to 10% weaker health and outgoing damage | Breakthrough-Impurity-Max-Penalty-Percent |
| Scaling | linear, by the share of your Qi that came from a Core | — |
A breakthrough funded entirely by Cores lands at the full penalty; one funded entirely by everything else lands at none. Everything in between scales linearly with the actual mix.
/cultivation info shows your current tracked Qi Purity before you decide to break through, and the breakthrough message itself names the penalty if it landed above 0.
A regular sub-stage advancement is untouched, and a failed ritual's demotion touches neither the running tally nor whatever penalty your last completed breakthrough already earned. A failed attempt can't be used to launder impurity history away for free — only finishing a breakthrough, clean or not, ever moves either number.
Cultivation Difficulty
A new Difficulty dropdown on the Cultivation Settings page lets you trade Qi cost against resulting strength.
| Difficulty | Qi cost | Resulting strength |
|---|---|---|
| Simple | −7% per rank-up | −10% |
| Default | today's numbers | today's numbers |
| Difficult | +10% per rank-up | +10% |
- The Qi-cost side is live — switch anytime, for free, and it changes what your very next sub-stage advancement or realm breakthrough costs.
- The strength side is not. Whatever difficulty is active the moment a rank-up actually completes locks in and averages into your current realm's climb, so switching mid-climb never retroactively changes a milestone you already locked in.
The running strength average resets fresh at every realm breakthrough, same as Qi Purity's own tracker above, and a failed ritual's demotion never touches it — only a completed milestone counts.
Fully independent of Qi Purity — the two stack, and stack safely: neither can push your health or damage to zero on its own.
The Four More Factors
Four more modifiers join Qi Purity and Difficulty above, all four realm-breakthrough-only, same as Qi Purity:
Where you stand
- Breaking through while standing in a dragon-tier Spirit Vein is worth a bonus.
- Breaking through inside your own sect's territory is worth another.
- The two stack, up to a full 2% combined if you manage both at once.
How you handled it
How you actually handled the tribulation matters:
- Come out at full health without leaning on a potion and you earn the biggest strength bonus this feature offers.
- Survive it battered and drugged through four or more potions and it costs you instead.
- The Tribulation Ward Pill is excluded from that potion count — it already pays its own price, below.
Timing
Timing plays a part too:
- Breaking through inside an open Secret Realm, or
- Under weather that resonates with your own Dao element,
is worth a bonus — whichever is stronger, not both at once.
Two new pills
| Pill | Effect | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Tribulation Sacrifice Pill | An immense Qi Barrier shield, well beyond the Barrier Talisman's own | A real cost to the Breakthrough Quality of the ritual it saves you from |
| Tribulation Ward Pill (banked charge) | Same effect as always — see Tribulations | A smaller cost of its own, on top of what it already does |
Both can be paid in the same ritual.
/cultivation info and the breakthrough message itself summarize all four of these factors in one line alongside your net Breakthrough Quality, rather than one line apiece.
How the Six Compose
All six modifiers compose together, with a floor that stops the worst-case stack from crushing you
All six modifiers — Qi Purity, Difficulty, and the four factors above — compose together, with a floor on their combined effect:
| Default | Key | |
|---|---|---|
| Combined multiplier floor | 25% of baseline | Breakthrough-Combined-Multiplier-Floor |
No combination of them can crush your health or damage toward zero. A cultivator who somehow triggers every negative modifier at once still lands a working realm, just a weak one — never a broken one.
