Cultivation: Rubber Duck
Outside the five classic and five shadow Daos sits one more root, off both rings entirely: the Duck Dao (鸭). Where every other element overcomes exactly one neighbor and is overcome by another, the Duck overcomes them all and is overcome by none — the price of standing outside the wheel altogether. It is a joke that cultivates.
Rubber Duck is a paid add-on for Cultivation, available with a Cultivation subscription or bought outright; Cultivation itself is free and always will be.
Claiming it
You do not pick the Duck Dao from the Spiritual Root page. You awaken it with a Carved Wooden Duck: carved, not rubber, since no such toy has ever been seen in this world. It is a Legendary-quality item and a rare drop (3% by default) from a vanilla Duck that a player lands the killing blow on. The quest-only Temple Duck never drops one. The drop appears beside you, not where the duck fell.
Use the duck (Secondary interaction) and it asks Cultivation to make the Duck Dao your root through the same path every other Dao pick takes, so all the usual rules apply:
- Your realm must have reached the Dao unlock realm (Foundation Establishment by default), and the Dao system must be on.
- The first Dao you ever pick is free. If you already walk another Dao, choosing the Duck is a deliberate switch: it costs banked Qi and honors the real-time cooldown.
- If you already walk the Duck, nothing happens.
The duck is used up only when the claim succeeds. Every refusal — Dao system off, Duck Dao switched off, realm too low, switching disabled, on cooldown, not enough Qi — says why and leaves the duck in your hand.
What the Duck Dao is
- It beats everything. The Duck Dao counters every classic and shadow element in combat, and none counters it. Its counter-cycle bonus is its own number, 5% by default (
Duck-Counter-Bonus-Percent), set apart from the 15% every other element's counter carries. - Two Duck-locked techniques. Both are usable only by a cultivator whose Dao is Duck, and both unlock at Qi Condensation. See below.
- The Duck Pond palette. While your Dao is Duck, your robes are chosen for you: a saturated rubber-duck-yellow reskin of every Cultivation menu, applied automatically and locked in the theme dropdown. Leave the Duck Dao and your own saved choice returns untouched.
- A trailing quack. A cultivator who walks the Duck Dao and belongs to a sect is followed by a cosmetic spray of feathers, re-pulsed every 4 seconds within 50 blocks. It respects the same self and other-player aura visibility settings as your cultivation aura.
- A title and a Codex entry. The Duck Dao title is unlocked by walking the Duck Dao, and the Codex gets an article, The Duck Dao.
The two arts
| Technique | Qi | Cooldown | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Duck's Peck | 8 | 6s | A sharp, indignant bill strike on everything alive within 3 blocks: 6 damage plus 1.5 per realm, dealt as Duck damage. |
| Furious Waddle | 5 | 4s | A short forward hop along your line of sight: 3 blocks plus 0.5 per realm. |
Both play the vanilla Duck's own alert quack. They are the rules as registered; a server owner can override any of them with a matching entry in Cultivation's Arts/TechniqueConfig.json. See Techniques.
Commands
Rubber Duck adds no commands. Everything happens through the Carved Wooden Duck (CultivationRubberDuck_WoodenDuck), the Spiritual Root page and the technique list.
For server owners
Four settings, in mods/Siren_CultivationRubberDuck/DuckConfig.json, also exposed as the Duck section of the in-game admin config editor. All of them apply live, with no restart.
| Key | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
Duck-Enabled | true | Master switch. Off, the Duck Dao cannot be newly claimed and ducks stop dropping the claim item. A cultivator who already walks Duck is untouched. |
Duck-Counter-Bonus-Percent | 5 | The Duck Dao's counter-cycle bonus. |
Duck-Kill-Drop-Chance-Percent | 3 | Chance, 0 to 100, that killing a vanilla Duck drops the claim item. |
Duck-Follower-Enabled | true | Whether the cosmetic follower is shown. |
Because the Duck Dao is registered through Cultivation's off-ring root registry, it stays unselectable if the add-on is not installed or is withdrawn, and it is entirely independent of Dao-Mutant-Roots-Enabled.
Getting it
Rubber Duck is available in the Pavilion — included with a Cultivation subscription, or bought once. It is server-side only: drop the jar beside Cultivation and restart, and your players install nothing.
The current build is v0.2.0. It requires Cultivation 0.11.0 or newer and a Hytale Update 7 server (Server API 0.7.0-pre.5.1), and will not load on an Update 6 server; the previous version is the one to keep there. Release 0.2.0 had no gameplay changes. If a pairing with Cultivation is later published as incompatible, the add-on hands back the root, title, Codex entry, techniques and locked palette without taking the server down or deleting anything.
