Calamity Beast
A Calamity Beast (灾劫兽) is a single, enormous predator that turns up every few hours near wherever somebody happens to be playing. Where a Beast Tide marches on a place, a Calamity Beast marches on no one in particular. It holds no ground, answers no summons, and belongs to whoever is bold enough to challenge it. If nobody does, it moves on, and in time it gives up and disappears.
It matters because it is the mod's open-invitation boss: no sect, no abode, no party and no realm requirement. Anyone who lands damage is on the ledger, and the payout is by how much you contributed.
The Codex article under The World is deliberately lore, not numbers. Before it appears, "an ashen omen darkens the sky". Left alone, "it drifts on to try its luck elsewhere", and "if nobody ever answers, it eventually tires of the hunt and vanishes without a trace". And "every strike that lands against it is remembered": whoever contributed most is rewarded, and a cultivator who wandered off mid-fight collects what they are owed the next time they are seen. See The Codex.
The omen
On its own timer, separate from the Celestial Event schedule, the server rolls a random wait of 240 to 480 minutes (4 to 8 hours; Boss-Interval-Min-Minutes and -Max-Minutes). When it is due, the server picks a random online player in an ordinary world (not the Heavenly Realm, a Sea of Consciousness or an instance) and starts an omen:
- Everyone online gets a chat line, The heavens shift - Calamity Beast has begun!, and a title card if screen titles are on (
Celestial-Announce-Titles-Enabled). - The sky of every player turns the color of old ash for five minutes (
Boss-Omen-Duration-Minutes; the sky isBoss-Omen-Weather, blank for the shipped one). - The server has already chosen where the beast will stand: a random point 110 to 200 blocks from that player (
Boss-Spawn-Min-Radius-Blocks,Boss-Spawn-Max-Radius-Blocks), on ground that is not a sect hall or building, a Cave Abode, a Secret Realm site or a land claim. - It also chose which beast it will be (see The beasts).
While the omen runs, the beast holds the shared celestial slot, so no Celestial Event and no Beast Tide warning can start. For the same reason an omen is never started while one of those is running, nor when a celestial event is due to begin before the omen would end. If it cannot start, it quietly tries again every 30 seconds (Celestial-Check-Interval-Seconds) until it can.
When the five minutes are up the sky clears and the beast is on the ground. The usual Calamity Beast has passed line shows up at that moment. It marks the end of the omen sky, not the beast leaving.
The 4 to 8 hour wait lives in memory. A restart rolls a new one, so a server that restarts more often than every few hours may rarely see an omen. A single online player is enough to attract one.
The beasts
One of three species is drawn at random when the omen starts (Boss-Role-Ids). All three have 3,000 health (Boss-Max-Health).
| Beast | Role id | Looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Calamity Serpent (灾劫巨蟒) | Cultivation_WorldBoss_Serpent | The Serpent King, a giant snake |
| Calamity Tiger (灾劫猛虎) | Cultivation_WorldBoss_Tiger | A sabertooth tiger |
| Calamity Phoenix (灾劫火凤) | Cultivation_WorldBoss_Phoenix | A phoenix |
A Calamity Beast trails a faint flame aura around it while it lives.
The fight
Finding it is half the task. From the moment the beast is on the ground:
- A blood-red Calamity Beast pin marks it on the world map for everyone in its world, however short their render distance. It follows the beast if it moves.
/calamity statusreports what is happening, to anyone, with no permission beyond the default. It names the phase (OMEN or ACTIVE), the beast's role id, its world and its exact coordinates, how many seconds remain, and the top three contributors so far. It works during the omen too, so the spot is knowable before the beast arrives.
The beast is lethal by default (Boss-Lethal). Turn that off and its blows can no longer finish a player off, and the Codex article says so in a note.
The prowl
A Calamity Beast is not obliged to wait for a challenger. Every 120 seconds (Boss-Relocation-Check-Seconds) the server asks whether anyone is engaged with it: a player within 60 blocks of it, or any damage dealt to it since the last check. If someone is, nothing happens. If nobody is, it loses patience and moves to a new spot, again 110 to 200 blocks from a random online player in the same world. It will do that up to twice (Boss-Max-Relocations). After that, the next time it is left alone it disappears.
Independently, 30 minutes after it appears the beast leaves whatever is happening (Boss-Timeout-Minutes). The clock starts when the omen ends, not when it began.
Rewards
Your contribution is the damage you deal to the beast, counted after armor and other reductions. Only your own hits count: a summoned spirit beast's damage does not, and neither does anything done on a sandbox profile. There is no realm requirement for this beast.
When it falls, each contributor is paid in Spirit Stones according to the single highest tier their contribution reached:
| Contribution reached | Spirit Stones |
|---|---|
| 10 | 20 |
| 50 | 75 |
| 150 | 200 |
(Boss-Reward-Contribution-Tiers, written as threshold:reward pairs.) Tiers do not stack, and below 10 you receive nothing. 150 damage is 5% of the beast's health, so a cultivator who joins late and hits only a few times still collects, but the top tier takes real effort.
Everyone in the beast's world is told The Calamity Beast has fallen! Contributors who are online are paid straight away (You receive N Spirit Stone(s) from the Calamity Beast you helped fell), hotbar first and then pack. If you are offline, or your inventory is full, the stones wait and arrive the next time you log in. There is no command to claim them.
When nobody wins
| How it ends | Reward |
|---|---|
| The beast is killed | Paid by contribution, as above |
| Left alone after its relocations are spent | None |
| The 30-minute limit runs out | None |
| It vanishes (the chunk it stood in unloaded) | None |
An admin runs /calamity stop | None |
Event World Bosses are a different thing
The Spirit Tide, Meteor Shower, Blood Moon and Starfall Convergence events each have a chance of bringing a themed boss of their own, such as the Tide Leviathan, and those are governed by the Event-Boss-* keys in the same WorldBossConfig.json. They share the Calamity Beast's reward machinery but not its omen, its schedule or its health, and a Calamity Beast always wins any collision with them. See Celestial Events.
Commands
| Command | Does | Permission |
|---|---|---|
/calamity | Lists the subcommands | cultivation.calamity |
/calamity status | Phase, role, world, coordinates, time left and the top three contributors, or "no Calamity Beast walks the land right now" | cultivation.calamity.status |
/calamity trigger | Starts an omen now near a random online cultivator admin | cultivation.admin |
/calamity stop | Ends the current beast or omen at once, with no reward admin | cultivation.admin |
cultivation.calamity and the node the server generates for the status branch, cultivation.calamity.status, are both granted to every player by default; trigger and stop reach nobody until you give them cultivation.admin. See Permissions.
/calamity trigger skips the 4 to 8 hour wait but obeys everything else: it answers A Calamity Beast stirs. when it works and No Calamity Beast could be summoned right now. when the beast is disabled, one is already live, a celestial event is running or due before the omen would end, no eligible player or spawn point exists, or another mod vetoes it. Do not use /celestial start beast_omen for this; the Calamity Beast refuses any omen it did not start itself. /calamity stop also clears the omen sky if the beast has not yet appeared.
For server owners
The Calamity Beast lives in mods/Siren_Cultivation/Society/WorldBossConfig.json, and its unpaid rewards in mods/Siren_Cultivation/Data/WorldBossData.json. It is not in the in-game /cultivation admin editor, so edit the file. The rest of the society files are on Society Configs.
